Menstruation is the monthly release of blood from the lining of the womb of a mature girl or woman through the vagina. Menstrual cycle ranges from the period between the first day of your monthly flow for the first month to the first day of your monthly flow for the second month.

How to calculate your menstrual cycle

This calculation is so easy but before you can confidently declare the number of days you have in your menstrual cycle, you have to repeat the observation for like 3-4 times to ensure stability. If it remains constantly the same, then you now have an established menstrual cycle. Bear it also in mind that your menstrual cycle could alter as a result of stress, malnutrition, drugs presently taken, abortion or childbirth. If your body undergoes any of these changes, it could cause hormonal imbalance thereby altering your cycle. Therefore, after childbirth or abortion, re- monitor your new body system to determine your new menstrual cycle.

To calculate your menstrual cycle, tick the first day of seeing menstrual blood for the first month. Then wait for another month. For the second month, also tick the first day of your menses. Then, go back and count the days between your first ticked day for month 1 and the first ticked day for month 2. It will amount to a number of days that consist your menstrual cycle. For instance:

If your menstruation for the month of September starts on the 1st of September and lasts for five days, please tick day 1 i.e 1st of September. Then wait for your next period. If your menstruation for the next month starts on 28th of September and lasts for another five days. Please tick day 1, i.e 28th of September. Now count from the first ticked day of the first month to the first ticked day of the next month to determine your menstrual cycle. That is,  1st of September to 28th of September. You will have a total of 28 days . This means that you have 28 days menstrual cycle. Isn’t this incredibly simple? Please note that you have to do this repeatedly for 3-4 times to have an established number of days. Consistency here matters a lot.

How to know your safe and unsafe period.

To know your safe and unsafe periods to have sex, you must first have an established and a constant menstrual cycle otherwise, it becomes useless. If your menstrual cycle is not regular, then first treat it’s irregularities before learning to know your safe and unsafe periods.

Your unsafe period is also known as your ovulation period. This is when you are very fertile and can easily get pregnant. All other days apart from your ovulation period are your safe periods, you cannot get pregnant even if you have unprotected sex.

To determine your unsafe period/ ovulation period, count up to half of your menstrual cycle and tick the middle day. ( If you have 28 days cycle, tick day 14. If you have 30 days cycle, then tick day 15. Just like that). Then tick three days before and three days after the middle day. You will have a total of seven (7) ticked days. These seven ticked days consist your ovulation or unsafe period. If you have any unprotected sexual contact during these fertile days, then you are bound to get pregnant. All other days in the month apart from your ticked days are your safe period. For instance:

Using the above established menstrual cycle of 28 days , you will tick the 14th day which is on the 14th of September. Then tick three days before i.e 13th, 12th, and 11th of September. Then also tick three days after, i.e 15th, 16th and 17th of September. You will have a total of seven ticked days, i.e from 11th – 17th of September. This is your ovulation/ unsafe period. You are fertile during these 7 days and can easily get pregnant. Other days of the month of September are free, safe days for you to have sex without fear of pregnancy. If you don’t want to get pregnant, then avoid unprotected sex during your ovulation period.
