Football is reputed to be one of the highest earning sports in the world and has an array of wealthy football stars. Little wonder footballers who play at the highest level of the game are known to exhibit expensive lifestyles.

Some of these wealthy football stars took their expenses way too far resulting in bankruptcy.

The former Ghanaian football skipper was once the highest paid African footballer. During his stint at top Chinese football club, Shanghai SIPG, he was reputed to be earning a whooping 227,000 Pounds per week salary. 

Gyan lost his wealth under mysterious circumstances. He was adjudged to be in such a financial disarray that he could not provide for his family.

This Brazilian legend was nothing short of a football magician during his prime. The former Barcelona and AC Milan star was also awarded the world best footballer twice. A decline in form and performance saw his financial status decrease as well.

Despite remortgaging his property, he was unable to cover his debts leading to a court order for his passport seizure.

However, his lucrative career in which his estimated overall earning was 20 Million Pounds couldn’t save him from bankruptcy in 2014. 


Whoever thought this football god who literally conquered the football world could be defeated by bankruptcy? The Argentine football icon who twice broke the world record for transfers to FC Barcelona and Napoli filed for bankruptcy in 2009.

The former Camerounian  football star is among the  few African players to  play for Manchester United. Though he was among the wealthy football stars during his prime,  bankruptcy came knocking afterwards. Djemba-Djemba became so financially drained that he had to play at St Mirren and in the Indian Super League to make ends meet. 

It is understood that that it takes more than talent on the football pitch for these wealthy football stars to maintain their financial statuses. It involves financial discipline, good management and intricate decisions.

However the lives of these famous football stars is an avenue for the current crop of football players to learn from their mistakes to avoid falling under the same unpleasant circumstances.
